World’s first LEED Gold certified hotel sees multiple benefits of Green Earth towel
Sheffield, Mass. - July 30, 2009 - Cypress Bath, Bed & Spa, the leading designer and manufacturer of luxury bathrobes, towels, slippers, and sheets for the global hospitality and spa industries, has announced that Gaia Napa Valley Hotel & Spa has chosen their environmentally-friendly Green Earth towel for property-wide use. A recently completed six-month pilot program by Gaia demonstrated credible and successful results to prove Cypress’ claim that the Green Earth towel provided energy savings, detergent use reductions and lowered water usage.
The 132 guestroom Gaia property is the perhaps the most visible example of sustainable hospitality in the world. Opened in 2006, using wood from sustainable forests, recycled materials for carpets and bath tiles, and solar panels that provide 12% of the electricity, the ability to reduce their laundry expenses through the use of Cypress’ Green Earth towel was invaluable.
"Obviously we were a bit intrigued by Cypress’ claims, so we were very stringent in assessing the results," stated Janice Alpeche, guest services manager of Gaia Napa Valley Resort & Spa. "The results proved conclusively that we could reduce our costs and still provide linens that meet the standard of luxury our guests expect. In fact, many have asked where they can buy the towels."
As clients continue to grow and real-world tests continue to show, the Green Earth towel will become synonymous with sustainable hospitality.

Although many hotels have now implemented towel reuse programs designed to minimize washing and drive down related laundry expenses and water use, some have found that such programs have not been as effective as they hoped.
Green Earth towels are made from super-fine, Extra-Long Staple (ELS) cotton, which is known for contributing to the sustainable consumption of cotton. ELS cotton is also recognized worldwide for its superior softness, absorbency, durability, lack of lint accumulation and luxurious feel. Green Earth towels are 160% bulkier than traditional combed cotton towels of the same weight, while having much less mass than traditional combed towels. Due to the higher ratio of surface area to towel weight, they absorb more water. Due to their lower mass, however, Green Earth towels cost significantly less to launder, saving up to 30% in water consumption, using less detergent and taking 10-20% less drying time. This reduces hotel operational costs, while also reducing environmental impact.
Green Earth towels are manufactured in a state-of-the-art, agri-waste powered, zero-discharge facility that produces no emission of effluents into the local water tables. The process also incorporates Control Union-certified, sustainable, eco-friendly dyes and chemicals to reduce impact on the environment, and are shipped in 100% natural and bio-degradable / recyclable packaging.
